Bone Densitometry

Bone DensitometerA Bone Mineral Density (BMD) or Bone Densitometry is performed on patients to check for bone mineral loss. Osteoporosis is a condition caused by a loss of bone calcium. Thus, BMD is an effective way to find out if you are a candidate for Osteoporosis or are Osteopenic.

The bone densitometer uses low amounts of x-ray to produce images of the spine and hip area. A computer is used to achieve results based on categories designated by the World Health Organization (WHO). These categories are based on what is considered normal for your age group and a “young adult” at peak bone strength. This result is called your T-score. T-scores fall into three different categories per WHO. These include Normal, Osteopenic, and Osteoporosis. This score, along with other factors, helps doctors gauge your risk of an osteoporatic fracture or the need for medication.
