Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) Treatment in Houston

If you have been diagnosed with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), you may experience pain and stiffness during sports, walking or even sitting. FAI can be severely limiting and may do additional damage to the hip joint if left untreated. At KSF Orthopaedic Center, Dr. Neil Dunleavy and our team of sports medicine specialists offer non-invasive and minimally-invasive surgical treatment of FAI and other debilitating hip conditions.

What is FAI?

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint comprised of the pelvis bone, hip “ball” and upper femur. It is coated with cartilage to allow smooth gliding. Femoroacetabular impingement may occur when extra bone is deposited at the hip joint over time, and the joint becomes misshapen. Because the bones no longer glide smoothly, constant friction leads to hip joint damage over time. The labrum surrounds the socket to stabilize the joint, and it may also be damaged with FAI.

Non-Surgical and Surgical Treatment for FAI

After evaluating your hip pain, requesting imaging, and tailoring your treatment protocol, Dr. Dunleavy will often recommend non-invasive treatments such as activity modification, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or physical therapy. Many times, patients receive notable benefit from these conservative options. In cases where conservative treatment fails, Dr. Dunleavy may recommend hip arthroscopy to relieve pain and optimize the long-term health of the hip.

While FAI treatment used to be primarily an “open” surgery, Dr. Dunleavy is one of few orthopaedic surgeons in the Greater Houston area utilizing minimally invasive outpatient techniques to treat FAI. Hip arthroscopy is a rapidly evolving field, and Dr. Dunleavy is trained and skilled in the latest techniques, which include smaller incisions, reduced pain, minimal scarring, and expedited recovery. In almost all cases cases, post-surgical hip arthroscopy patients may return home the same day as surgery, walk with crutches for only 1-2 weeks, and expect to return to sports after 3-4 months.

Hip arthroscopy and labrum repair aims to correct hip impingement and “reshapes” the hip to improve joint function. After undergoing post-procedural physical therapy, FAI patients typically enjoy excellent surgical outcomes.
