Knee, Shoulder & Hip Surgery & Sports Medicine Orthopaedics
Dr. Neil Dunleavy is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon. He began his medical training at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He graduated with honors before earning his Doctor of Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Dunleavy completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Columbia University’s St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, where he received the Department Research Award for his work on cartilage engineering performed at The Columbia University Department of Biomedical Engineering. He then went on to obtain additional fellowship training in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he trained in the most advanced, minimally invasive techniques for surgery of the hip, shoulder and knee.
Sports Medicine Specializations
Dr. Dunleavy specializes in orthopaedic sports medicine, hip arthroscopy, advanced arthroscopic hip labrum repairs, femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), endoscopic hip bursectomy, “all-inside” arthroscopy-assisted ACL reconstruction, meniscus preservation, cartilage preservation and reconstruction techniques, microfracture, osteochondral autograft and allograft transfer in the knee, shoulder impingement, arthroscopic biceps tenodesis, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic shoulder labrum repair (SLAP Tears), tendinopathy, fracture care, and general orthopaedic surgery. He uses musculoskeletal ultrasound for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, and prefers using the ultrasound to guide most injections of the hip.
Knee, Shoulder, Hip Philosophy
“I enjoy offering new, minimally-invasive arthroscopic techniques for knee, shoulder and hip pain – particularly for patients with pain in their hips. Historically, hip preservation surgery involved large incisions and long recovery times. Now we are often able to perform arthroscopic hip surgery through small incisions to reduce pain, improve function and preserve the cartilage of the hip.”
While at the University of Chicago, Dr. Dunleavy assisted and trained under the team physicians for the NFL Chicago Bears. He also served as a team physician for the MLS Chicago Fire soccer team, University of Chicago sports teams, and local high school football teams.
Dr. Dunleavy prefers a conservative approach to treating his patients. “When possible, I encourage my patients to explore nonsurgical treatment methods prior to considering surgery, and in most cases non-operative measures are successful. However, if pain persists, we are trained to provide the latest minimally-invasive techniques available.”
Dr. Dunleavy is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the Texas Medical Association, the Harris County Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.
In his spare time, Dr. Dunleavy is an avid sports fan, and enjoys baseball, golf and tennis. Most of all, he enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters.
