Rotator Cuff Treatment

The rotator cuff is a group of four tendons surrounding the shoulder joint. When the rotator cuff tears, a portion of the tendons pulls off from the attachment to the bone. In a partial tear, the rotator cuff is partially pulled off the bone. In a full thickness tear, a portion of the rotator cuff is completely pulled off the bone. Rotator cuff tears can occur from overuse or from an acute injury.

Symptoms of rotator cuff tear include pain, weakness, popping, and stiffness. Rotator cuff tears are diagnosed through a medical exam, as well as imaging technology like x-rays and MRI.

Rotator Cuff Treatment and Repair

Treatment of rotator cuff tears depends on the extent of the damage and the patient’s age and activity level. Non-surgical treatments include activity modification, anti-inflammatory medication, and physical therapy. Surgical rotator cuff repair involves reattaching the rotator cuff to the bone. With advanced technology, rotator cuff repair can be performed using minimally invasive, arthroscopic techniques.
