Frequently Asked Questions

What is the KSF approach to spinal treatment?

Spinal treatment includes nonoperative and operative care of the neck, upper back and low back. Generally, most problems in the neck, upper back and low back can be treated with a combination of medications, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and exercises. Only occasionally is surgical intervention necessary. You will be evaluated by an orthopaedic surgeon, a history will be taken, and a physical examination will be completed. Occasionally x-rays, MRI's and electrodiagnostic testing may be indicated.

What are common reasons for spinal pain?

The number one reason for spinal pain is overuse and strain. Most neck, upper back and low back pain is caused by a combination of being out-of-shape, overweight, and having weak musculature. Core stabilization is the bedrock of treating spinal pain. This is accomplished through the use of physical therapy and an exercise program. Medications may be used to decrease pain and discomfort while you carry out the exercise program.

How does a KSF Orthopaedic physician diagnose what is causing pain?

This requires listening to the patient, taking a careful history, and performing a directed physical examination. This may also include x-rays, advanced imaging such as MRI's or CT scans, and electrodiagnostic testing. Occasionally laboratory testing is also necessary.

IV. What kinds of surgery does KSF use for spinal pain?

There is a variety of surgical interventions. There are decompressive procedures where nerve roots are decompressed surgically. This may mean removal of bone, ligament and/or disc material. Occasionally surgical intervention may also include placement of bone graft for fusion. If bone graft or fusion is necessary, often metal screws or plates are used to enhance the stability of the area of the spine while fusion takes place.
