Houston Hip Bursitis Treatment
Whether you are an elite athlete or an active individual, hip pain can be a challenge to diagnose and treat. At KSF Orthopaedic Center, Dr. Neil Dunleavy and his team specialize in hip injury, disorders, and preservation. Hip conditions may arise due to aging, inflammation, repetitive use or traumatic injury. When left unaddressed, they may also lead to knee, ankle and low back problems.
Hip Bursitis Causes & Solutions
Hip bursitis, also known as greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS), is characterized by inflammation of the hip bursae. These small, fluid-filled sacs surround the hip to cushion the joint and allow it to glide smoothly. Bursae may become irritated and swollen with repetitive use, acute hip injuries or after surgery. This hip bursitis affects patients differently, and may include these symptoms:
- Generalized joint discomfort
- Sharp, shooting pain followed by a dull ache
- Discomfort while sleeping on the affected side
- Joint swelling
- Pain with walking
- Pain while climbing stairs
- Weakened muscles
- Limited mobility
Non-Surgical & Surgical Treatment for Hip Bursitis
Before recommending surgery, Dr. Dunleavy works to resolve hip pain and bursitis symptoms using non-operative methods. An expert in the latest minimally invasive techniques for hip pain, he takes a conservative approach to orthopaedic treatment. Surgery is usually not needed for hip bursitis but may be offered when physical therapy, medical management, injections, activity modification and other non-surgical treatments fail to resolve painful hip symptoms.
If a hip bursectomy is required, Dr. Dunleavy utilizes the latest minimally invasive techniques to perform endoscopic procedures to relieve the pain associated with bursitis. These types of hip procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and are well tolerated by most patients. In most cases, only two small subcentimeter portals are necessary to successfully perform the procedure. Most patients may return to unrestricted activity within 4-6 weeks after surgery.
