Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) Treatment
Houston, TX | Cypress, TX |

Suppose you have been diagnosed with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). In that case, you may experience pain and stiffness during sports, walking, or even sitting. FAI can be severely limiting and may do additional damage to the hip joint if left untreated. At KSF Orthopaedic Center, Dr. David Sun and our team of hip doctors and sports medicine specialists offer non-invasive and minimally-invasive surgical treatment of FAI and other debilitating conditions.
What is FAI?
The hip is a ball-and-socket joint comprised of the pelvis bone, hip “ball,” and upper femur. It is coated with cartilage to allow smooth gliding. Femoroacetabular impingement may occur when extra bone deposits at the hip joint over time, and the joint becomes misshapen. Because the bones no longer glide smoothly, constant friction leads to joint damage over time. The labrum surrounds the socket to stabilize the joint, and it can be damaged with FAI.
Non-Surgical and Surgical Treatment for FAI
After evaluating your pain, requesting imaging, and tailoring your treatment protocol, Dr. Sun , our hip doctor, will often recommend non-invasive treatments such as activity modification, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or physical therapy. Many times, patients receive a notable benefit from these conservative options. In cases where conservative treatment fails, Dr. Sun may recommend hip arthroscopy to relieve pain and optimize your health. Hip arthroscopy and labrum repair aim to correct its impingement and “reshapes” the hip to improve joint function. After undergoing post-procedural physical therapy, FAI patients typically enjoy excellent surgical outcomes.
FAI treatment used to be primarily an “open” surgery. Dr. Sun is one of few orthopedic surgeons in the Greater Houston, TX area utilizing minimally invasive outpatient techniques to treat FAI. This method is a rapidly evolving field. Dr. Sun is trained and skilled in the latest techniques, including smaller incisions, reduced pain, minimal scarring, and expedited recovery.
In almost all cases, post-surgical patients may return home the same day as surgery, walk with crutches for only 1-2 weeks, and expect to return to sports after 3-4 months. Our facility welcomes patients from all around Houston, TX including Cypress, TX and The Woodlands, TX and nearby areas. You’ll be in good hands with our hip doctors and medical professionals at KSF Orthopedic Center.
