Shoulder Joint Replacement

At KSF Orthopaedic, we have a team of Board Certified shoulder surgeons who specialize in complete shoulder care at both of our Houston locations. As part of the shoulder care services we offer, shoulder joint replacement is a surgery offered to treat a range of shoulder conditions and injuries if severe enough.

Conditions Requiring Replacement of the Shoulder

When non-surgical shoulder treatments do not relieve pain, shoulder joint replacement surgery may be recommended by an orthopedic physician to get you back to your daily activities without the pain. Common shoulder conditions that may require shoulder joint replacement surgery may include severe fractures, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and rotator cuff injuries. Some of these shoulder injuries can lead to lost cartilage and deterioration of the shoulder joint, which is painful but also a hindrance to performing normal daily activities due to a loss of strength and range of motion.

Types of Shoulder Joint Replacement

Shoulder joint replacement is a resurfacing of the shoulder joint surfaces with synthetic components made of metal and plastic. It is recommended for patients with severe shoulder joint arthritis or in certain types of fractures of the upper portion of the humerus.

Total shoulder replacement is a resurfacing of the ball and socket of the shoulder joint. Hemiarthroplasty is the replacement of only the ball side of the shoulder joint. Reverse shoulder arthroplasty is a newer device that is used to replace the shoulder joint in patients with severe shoulder joint degeneration resulting from a chronic non-repairable rotator cuff tear.
