About the Provider

Dr. S. Michael Dean is an experienced orthopedic surgeon with special interests in shoulder and knee injuries. He attended medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the Medical Honor Society. He then completed a five-year residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. His interest in medicine and his desire to use his hands led him to orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Dean feels fortunate to have been trained when both open and arthroscopic surgery were used widely. “Today, many procedures that we used to do open, are now done arthroscopic ally. It is important to know both techniques in order to choose what is best for each individual case.” Dr. Dean tries to treat patients nonoperatively when possible and feels that another beneficial aspect of his training was learning both nonoperative and operative treatments for orthopedic problems. Dr. Dean and his wife have three children. He spends most of his spare time with his children’s sports. He enjoys jogging, golf, hunting, fishing, and skiing.
